Summer is coming and it’s time to beat that Winter pudge with detoxing and cleansing.
Besides juicing, a salad is a great way to detox and cleanses your body.
What exactly is a detox salad?
A detox salad is simply a mixture of ingredients that have detoxifying properties on the body. Many times these ingredients are finely chopped, which makes them easier to chew up and digest. Often these ingredients will be high in fiber, encouraging your digestive system to do its job. Some ingredients may help to cleanse the liver or kidney.
Today I made a rainbow detox and cleanse salad includes tomatoes, sweet potato, cucumber, radish, carrots, corn, avocado, purple cabbage, beans, and leafy greens.
What makes this salad a detox salad:
Tomatoes contain a powerful antioxidant, lycopene, the red pigment found in many fruits and vegetable. The antioxidant in lycopene protects the liver from free radical damage. This allows the liver to function optimally, metabolizing and removing toxins from the body.
Sweet potatoes are low in calories and high in dietary fiber and water content.
Cucumber contains antioxidants that will help battle free radicals and helps the body flush out built- up toxins. Cucumber is also great for reducing bloating and uncomfortable water retention.
Radish contains a special compound known as RsPHGPx that act as an antioxidant in the phase 2 liver detoxification pathway.
Carrot is rich in glutathione, a protein that helps detoxify the liver. Carrots also have a significant amount of dietary fiber, which is one of the most important elements in maintaining good digestive health.
Corn is a rich source of antioxidants which fight cancer-causing free radicals. Corn is also relatively low in fat and fairly high in fiber.
Corn is classified as a starchy vegetable, which you should limit in order to maintain a healthy body weight.
Avocado is rich in glutathione and fiber. It is also a good source of monosaturated fat which helps with weight loss.
Red cabbage is low in calories and high in fiber.
Beans are loaded with fiber and are a great source of antioxidant, phytochemical that fight against free radicals that damage the body.
Beans also contain a significant amount of proteins and will keep you feel full longer.
Leafy greens are low in calories and carbohydrate but loaded with fiber. Eating leafy greens is a great way to increase the volume of your meal, without increasing the calories.
Most of the salad calories come from salad dressing. Many salad dressing is loaded with polyunsaturated oil, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, MSG and other artificial ingredients.
Today, I made my own tahini salad dressing and it only needs 4 ingredients.
If you are unable to make your own salad dressing, here is what you need to know:
- Choose good oils
- Read the labels
- Avoid low-fat options. Low fat means high carb, which these carbs will turn into fat fast.
- Shop in the refrigerated area.
- Avoid sugary dressing.
- Be careful with “healthy”, “organic”, “olive oil based” and “all natural” labeling.
